Salt & Straw Coming to West Hollywood in Early 2017

Salt & Straw, the iconic, family-run ice cream purveyor known for its artisanal, chef-driven approach to an American classic, has announced plans to open a new scoop shop at 8949 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood next year. As an introduction to the community, Salt & Straw will be hosting a fundraiser for The Trevor Projecton Friday, November 18 from 7 pm – 10 pm outside the forthcoming shop, offering $1 scoops of their inspired flavors like Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Chocolate Gooey Brownie,Honey Lavender and more. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ young people ages 13-24.

“It's been an incredible journey since we first came down to Los Angeles two years ago, and we’re so thrilled to be able to continue setting down roots here,” says Kim Malek, who founded Salt & Straw in Portland with her cousin, Tyler, in 2011. “We’ve been continually inspired by all the unique enclaves like West Hollywood that make this city so vibrant, and are looking forward to becoming a part of the local fabric.”

The West Hollywood scoop shop will feature all the staple flavors that have made Salt & Straw so beloved by Angelenos since its arrival in the city’s Larchmont Village area in 2014. Favorites such as Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache, featuring Grandma Malek’s recipe for almond brittle, and Freckled Woodblock Chocolate, prepared using an old school ice cream-making technique called “freckling” to suspend the artisanal chocolate in each bite, will be joined by locally-inspired flavors like Avocado & Strawberry Sherbet ribboned with Strawberry Vanilla Bean jam from local Laura Ann’s Jams, and Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese showcasing oil-cured olives from Olivos del Mar farms and Cypress Grove Creamery’s goat cheese. Monthly-rotating specials from Tyler, who also serves as Salt & Straw’s Head Ice Cream Maker, will similarly find inspiration from the Southern California culinary landscape, as well as seasonal produce from area farmers. Recipes are created with 100% all-natural cream from Scott Brothers Dairy in-line with the company’s philosophy to source the best possible products available, and all ice creams are churned in a local kitchen in Boyle Heights to ensure optimal quality and freshness.

“We’re exceedingly grateful for the reception we’ve received from the food community here, as well as the dedicated fans who have supported us since our arrival,” says Tyler. “It’s been amazing to see how our scoop shops have brought so many people together, and become these wonderful gathering spaces in their own right. We can’t wait to keep sharing that spirit with more new neighbors in West Hollywood.”

Like all Salt & Straw scoop shops, the space will be outfitted with hand-carved wood paneling and Salt & Straw’s signature awning, an homage to their humble beginning as a red-and-white striped ice cream cart. Each element is selected to engender the feeling of a modern-day, community-oriented mercantile that brings locals together with friends, family, neighbors, or even the farmer or artisan whose product is showcased in the latest flavor offering.

Construction begins on the 965 square-foot shop this fall. The West Hollywood location will be the fifth Los Angeles scoop shop in the Salt & Straw family, joining the original flagship shop in Larchmont Village and outposts in Venice, Studio City, and the Arts District. Salt & Straw Ice Cream is a chef-driven ice cream kitchen with scoop shops in Portland and Los Angeles that partners with local artisans, producers and farmers to serve unusually creative and absolutely delicious ice cream. Each ice cream is handmade in small batches using only all natural cream from local farms in each city. Flavors showcase the best local, organic and sustainable ingredients from Oregon and Southern California farmers and artisans as well as imported flavors from small hand-picked farms from around the world. The company started in Portland, OR serving eight flavors from an ice cream cart in May of 2011 and now has three scoop shops in Portland and four in LA. Scoops of handmade, small batch ice creams, sundaes, milkshakes and floats as well as pints to go are available at each with an ice cream sommelier of sorts who will gladly take you through a tasting of all the flavors. Favorites, seasonal, design your own variety packs and pint club memberships are available for online purchase and can be shipped anywhere in the United States. Salt & Straw’s ice cream cart is available for catering parties and events. In April of 2016, Salt & Straw opened Wiz Bang Bar at Pine Street Market, a soft serve dessert bar featuring fresh spins on the childhood swirl, sundaes, novelties, and more. Holiday gift buying guide - a scooter should be on the list!

Chicago-based Genuine Scooters is the largest US based scooter company, and the third largest seller of scooters in the US with 250 dealers across the country.  They have sold nearly 60,000 scooters during their 14 years of operation and their new “Kick” scooter is quickly becoming a best-selling favorite.
Boasting 100 mpg, the Kick will still go more than 60 mph, powered by a 124.5cc, air-cooled engine.  Available in glossy titanium, turquoise, tangerine and white, the scooter MSRP is $3,199.

Celebrities ride Genuine scooters
No surprise really with the popularity of Genuine Scooters and celebrities - glancing on Pinterest, you’ll see the Kardashians, Tom Hanks, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ryan Macklemore, Jason Mraz and Queen Latifiah all riding them.  Most recently, Zac Efron and the Rock are riding them in the shooting of the upcoming Baywatch reboot movie and Sharon Stone in her upcoming film, “A Little Something For Your Birthday.”

Why not give the planet a present - scooters are environmentally friendly
Lastly, switching from a car to a scooter can have a tremendous positive impact on the planet. A car will emit 0.93 pounds of carbon dioxide per mile, compared with 0.31 pounds for a scooter – and a car produces 2 1/2 times as much greenhouse gas as a scooter.
